Operator Stations 3540 OS with LCD display has 4 lines of fourty .192 inch characters. The keypad can have any combination of up to 35 keys in a horzontal or vertical pattern, different key sizes, hot keys, graphics and color schemes, click on "Sample Key Patterns" to see samples. Eight LED key status indicators RS-232 controlled by the host. Outputs are PS2, RS 232 or RS 422.

Any display position can be addressed by the host. The blink rate is controlled by the host and can be sent to any display position. Keypad input can go to the host, or to the display, and the host.

Overall size is 8.00 x 8.75 x 1.25. Standard colors are Black, Gray or Off White.

Surface mounted. Power supply 5VDC at 250mA or 12VAC is required unless the OS has PS2 output then the PS2 port powers the OS -


Section 1. Introduction

Congratulations! You have just purchased a quality Operator Station with our new Matrix Touch (TM) keyboard designed for many years of use as an input and display device. The keyboard has two basic key patterns: one, with up to 20 touch positions with a touch position pitch of .75 inch; and the second with up to 35 touch positions with a .50 inch pitch. Both touch patterns can have a 2nd key so when dual marked can double the amount of touch positions. The key text, size of keys, colors, logo's, macro outputs can be customer specified at time of order for an extra charge. Both touch patterns can be either horizontal (landscape) or vertical (portrait). This manual covers both basic touch patterns because operation is the same.

The Operator Station (OS) has one screw on the lower side to remove the front housing. All components are attached to this front housing. The front housing must be removed for mounting. With the front housing removed configuration switches are on the rear of the keyboard housing. These switches configure the OS for options, and are detailed in the Section 6. By having switch selectable features there is no need for batteries or other electronic storage devices. The configuration is checked by the micro processor every 50 milliseconds, so even if a reset or power outage occures the configuation will not change. This simplistic approach allows for a rugged OS for the industrial and commercial markets. The OS is fitted with a Matrix Touch (TM) keyboard detects your fingure optically. It has a matrix of infrared (IR) beams so when a finger touches the key text surface it blocks a X and Y beam and the finger location is detected. Since there are no moving parts there is nothing to wear out, and with no openings it can be easily washed off. The key text is sub-surface printed so it will not wear off. Outputs are PS2, RS-232, and RS-422. The OS can output PS2 and have the host input RS-232/422 to update the display, or OS keyboard can update the display and output RS-232/422 to the host, or the OS can output to the host RS-232/422 and have the host update the display with RS-232/422 input.

An audible response can be enabled to give the user a response for a touched position, and is shipped as standard with this feature enabled. The keyboard housing is .080 thick molded from polycarbonate and has been industrially designed to be user friendly. The housing is coated with a hard coat to protect it from perspiration and other chemicals, wash down, scratches, and UV. The OS is designed to meet NEMA 12 requirments. Optional NEMA 4 and stainless steel housings will be quoted to customer requirments. Having an optical keyboard the OS should not be mounted in direct sunlight. The Operator Station is designed with state of the art components and made in the USA by Electronic Keyboards, Inc., a company with over thirty years of experience in designing quality products for the industrial and commercial markets.

Section 2. Model Numbers

3540 with up to 20 touch positions has a .75 pitch, and from 20 to 35 touch positions has a .50 inch pitch. A number will be assigned to the customers key text overlay and be included in the part number.

Ordering Suffixes: -V (vertical touch pattern), -H (horizontal touch pattern), -C2 (RS-232 output), -C4 (RS-422 output), -PS2 (PS2 output), -B (black), -G (gray), -W (off white), and -Pen (pendent). All OS's are custom so the last suffix is the customer number. E.g. 2016-C2-B-customer number.

Section 3. Specifications

The Operator Station is 8.00 inches wide, 8.75 inches tall, and 1.38 inches thick. It weights 40 ounces. The total key text area is 3.00x3.75 inches. The power requirements are 5 VDC @ 50-150 ma as standard depending on outputs, or optional 12 VAC @ 80-200 ma. When used with PS2 keyboard output no power supply is needed. All voltages in the OS are class 2.

The OS can be mounted on a surface of an enclosure or wall, on a positionable arm, or not mounted and held by the user when inputting data. When order with the -Pen (pendent) suffix the OS has four rubber feet installed over the mount holes. Consult the factory for dimensions.

Section 6. Configuration Selection

The switches to activate selectable features of the Matrix Touch (TM) Keyboard are exposed through the rear cover of the keyboard. They are numbered 1 through 12, and can either be on or off. This switch is marked S1.

Switch 1. Off = keypad data to host only. Host data to display. On = keypad data to host and OS display. Host data also to display.

Switch 2. Off = keypad CR goes back to first position of present row. On = CR does a LF.

Switches 3, 4, 5. Gives a binary read, 3=LSB, for Output config. a) 000 (lsb) = Open b) 001 (lsb) = Custom, for customer specific key patterns c) 010 (lsb) = PS2 d) 011 (lsb) = ASC11, 0-9, a-h, * and # e) 100 (lsb) = Test Pattern (this pattern should only be used with SW1=On. The set and clear commands should only be tested with the comms link disconnected, if not, some commands may set the host in an unexpected state. f) 101-111 Open

Switch 9. Off = Nothing sent on Reset to host. On = ^ sent on Reset. Switch 10. Off = audible response for key touch. On = No response for key touch.

Switch 11. Connects external ground, always On.

Switch 12. Connects +5vdc to internal +5vdc, always On.

Section 7. Operational Specifications

These specifications are based on a standard OS. But are only to be used as a guideline. Within the limits of the OS can be factory programmed to a non-standard for an NRE charge. These non-standards can be as small as one code difference being sent, and can be for one OS.

7.1 Framing Error - If a framing or overrun error occurs on data coming from the host, the OS sends back to the host < (0x3e), the character it received, > (0x3c).

7.2 OS Reset - A Reset ^ (0x5e) is sent from the OS to the host following a power up or a request for Reset from the host. See Config switch 9. When the host request a Reset it sends a DC4 (0x14, PS2 ctrl-t) to the OS, the OS then does a RAM check and in 300mSec it sends the host ^. All data is cleared (lost) and the cursor is positioned in the first position of the first row.

7.3 Set LED's - To set and clear the status LED’s the host sends the OS a DC3 (0x13, PS2 ctrl-s), followed by to number of LED to be set from 1-8. The number is sent in ASCII – 1=0x31, 2=0x32, 3=0x33, 4=0x34, 5=0x35, 6=0x36, 7=0x37, and 8=0x38. To reset all LED’s to the “OFF” condition a 0 (0x30) is sent. The LED’s that the host wants to remain in the “ON” condition must be resent to the OS after sending a 0 (0x30). See Section 8 for LED positions.

7.4 Clear Display - To Clear the display and set the cursor to the first position in the first row the host sends a DC2 (0x12, PS2 ctrl-r).

7.5 Back Space - To Back Space the host sends a BS (0x08) in either row.

7.6 Carriage Return - To do a Carriage Return the host sends a CR (0x0d). See Config switch 2.

7.7 Line Feed - A LF in either row will do a line feed. When done in row 2 the data in row 1 will be lost, and the data in row 2 will be sent to row 1. The position will remain the same.

7.8 Communication set-up - 2,400 baud, Xon-Xoff, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, DCE, and no parity.

7.9 Set 1st command – At any location in row 1 or 2 if a DC1 (0x11, PS2 ctrl- q) is sent the cursor will be positioned in the 1st row at the lower nibble (0-f) of the following second byte sent, e.g. first byte sent is DC1, the second byte hex x6, the cursor will be in the 7th position from the left.

7.10 Set 2nd command – At any location in row 1 or 2 if a SUB (0x1a, PS2 ctrl-z) is sent the cursor will be positioned in the 2nd row at the lower nibble (0-f) of the following second byte sent, e.g. first byte sent is SUB, the second byte hex xf, the cursor will be in the 16th position from the left.

7.11 Blink – This can be done using the Set 1st and Set 2nd commands. The host can blink any number of positions in either row by alternately sending a Space and a character to the same locations at timed intervals.

7.12 Communications I/O Connector – For RS-232, DB-9, pin 1=+5VDC, pin 2=tx1, pin 3=rx1, pin 4=shield, pin 5=ground. If the OS is being powered by 12 VAC separate terminals are used, consult factory. For RS-422 consult factory.

Section 8. LED Status Indicator Positions Available

The twenty position Matrix Touch (TM) keyboard has eight (8) LED status positions in fixed locations that can be controlled by the communications link, either RS-232 or RS-422. The locations are shown in the following two figures, one being for a vertically mounted keyboard and the second being for a horizontally mounted keyboard. The positions are numbered from one (1) through eight (8). See section 7.3 to control LED's.

Section 9. Key Code Set

9.1 ASCII - Standard ASCII codes from 0x00 to 0x7f are supported by the display and the keyboard.

9.2 PS2 - The keyboard uses Ps2 keycodes from scan code two (2). If the keyboard is plugged into the older scan code one (1) type computers the keyboard will acknowledge back to the computer (after a F0) that it is a scan code two keyboard, in most cases this will cause an error to be displayed on the monitor. If a customer needs scan code one (1) it can be provided as an option. Ps2 commands from the computer that the keyboards answers with the standard protocol are: FF (reset); ED (set/reset status indicators); EE (echo); F0 (select alternate scan codes); F2 (read ID); and FE (resend). The remainder of the command set is received and acknowledged but no action is taken.
